"Under Fire" captures Argentinean saxophonist Gato Barbieri at his creative peak in the early 1970s, showcasing his artistic evolution from avant-garde experimentation toward South American musical traditions, yet before his later descent into uninspired fusion. The recording features an impressive ensemble: his trusted collaborator Lonnie Liston Smith on piano (pre-dating Smith's later commercial fusion period), percussion masters Airto Moreira and James Mtume, legendary drummer Roy Haynes making a special appearance on "El Parana," emerging talent John Abercrombie on guitar, and a young Stanley Clarke demonstrating his formidable acoustic bass prowess.
