Live at the Funky Quarters, recorded live in 1972, provides an accurate snapshot of its era. Cal Tjader's vibraphone is held aloft with John Heard's Jaco Pastorious-style bass and Al Zulaica's electric piano, giving the recordings a distinctly fusion-y texture. Fans of early-70s fusion will find plenty to appreciate, as Tjader plays with his typical finesse while Zulaica engages with tasteful solos. Favoured Tjader tunes, such as "Manteca" and "Soul Sauce III", are given a jazz-rock makeover, and newer compositions like "Philly Mambo" and the tender "Mother and Child" showcase the players' skills.
