John Denver's Greatest Hits first debuted in 1973, strategically timed for the holiday shopping season. The compilation featured songs from Denver's early years as a songwriter, dating back to 1965 with "For Bobbie", all the way to his most recent hit, "Rocky Mountain High". This album holds historical significance as it boasted refreshed, reimagined versions of several tracks, such as "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Starwood in Aspen", "Follow Me", "Rhymes and Reasons", "The Eagle and the Hawk", "Sunshine On My Shoulders", and "Poems, Prayers, and Promises". In the liner notes, Denver personally explains his rationale for these new recordings, stating that he chose the most requested songs from his concerts and aimed to give them a fresh take with his improved vocal abilities and a unique spin on the originals.
