Considered by many as one of the most groundbreaking albums in jazz history, Miles Davis's Bitches Brew established the jazz-rock fusion genre. Featuring up to a dozen musicians simultaneously—including established and soon-to-be prominent artists like Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Airto, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, and others—the album was originally perceived as extended jams centered on keyboard, bass, or guitar vamps. In reality, producer Teo Macero crafted the final work by meticulously editing together various jam sessions and takes, splice by splice, a technique he employed on several of Miles’s albums during this era.
