Autumn Blow
Recorded live in 1977, Autumn Blow captures Sadao Watanabe at a creative peak, successfully bridging the gap between his bebop roots and the burgeoning jazz-fusion movement. Backed by a powerhouse American rhythm section including Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Anthony Jackson, the album eschews the "smooth" polish of Watanabe's later 80s work in favour of high-energy, funk-driven improvisation and gritty, propulsive solos. From the expansive opener "Just Cruisin'" to the rhythmic intensity of "Orange Bypass," it remains a definitive document of the era’s "Crossover" sound—vibrant, breezy, yet technically formidable.
