Approach brings together three J Jazz legends—bassist Isao Suzuki, percussionist Masahiko Togashi, and keyboardist Hideo Ichikawa—with young guitarist Akira Shiomoto. Originally released in 1986 on Art Union, this five-track album balances serene ambient passages with explosive energy. Suzuki's resonant bass, Togashi's inventive percussion, and Ichikawa's lush textures create a sophisticated yet experimental soundscape, anchored by Shiomoto's melodic guitar work. From the driving opener 'Make Trip' through the bluesy 'Otari' and the synth-textured 'Mysterious', to the freely improvised 'Tornado' and the stunning closer 'East Words', the ensemble demonstrates masterful interplay and control.
