A rare late-’50s Art Blakey session from a brief period when Jackie McLean played alto saxophone with the Jazz Messengers. Its sound is a little rougher around the edges than some of Blakey’s other recordings from this era, giving McLean’s horn plenty of room to shine. The lineup also features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Spanky DeBrest on bass and Sam Dockery on piano. Tracks include “Casino,” “Potpourri,” “The Biddie Griddies,” “Ugh” and “Reflections of Buhania.”
