Stanley Clarke's self-titled second album stands among the top fusion albums of the '70s. Clarke gathered star players of the genre--Bill Connors and Airto (both from Return To Forever), Jeff Beck Group keyboardist Jan Hammer, and the great Tony Williams on drums-- to form his band. All the songs, driven by Clarke's bass, are terrific; any could fit on the iconic RTF albums. "Lopsy Lu" is especially noted as one of the earliest fusion pieces featuring a bass playing melody and rhythm at once, with no overdubbing. On "Spanish Phases for Strings & Bass," Clarke showcases his incomparable acoustic bass solo. Highly recommended for both bass and fusion fans!
