Janis Ian's Aftertones built on the artistic and commercial success of her previous album Between the Lines (1975). Accompanied by top musicians from New York City, she crafted sensitive sonic portraits. Ian's folk sensibilities evolved beyond those of her mid-'70s contemporaries. Her melodies, supported by personalized lyrics, enticed listeners. The title track opens the album with a baroque guitar and strings, while "Love Is Blind" and "Don't Cry, Old Man" are candidly honest. Uplifting tracks "I Would Like to Dance" and "Boy, I Really Tied One On" contrast the kinky blues of "This Must Be Wrong." The dark jazz of "Goodbye to Morning" features Richard Davis' acoustic bass and Ian's guitar. The album's magnum opus, "Hymn," is a gospel trio with Odetta and Phoebe Snow, whose aftertones resonate with majesty.
