In 1967, Charles Lloyd Quartet released Love-In, after the 1966 summer blowout. Ron McClure replaced Cecil McBee, bringing intricate lyricism and a knowledge of modal techniques used by Coltrane and Coleman's bands. Of the 7 selections, 4 are Lloyd's, 2 are by pianist Keith Jarrett, and 1 is by Lennon/McCartney ("Here, There and Everywhere"). The album reflects the '60s youth movement with Jarrett pushing harmonic boundaries and DeJohnette introducing an array of time signatures. Lloyd led the music from post-bop to modal to blues to Eastern raga to cool and back. Love-In is a lasting tribute to the band's cultural ecumenism.
