Outback, Joe Farrell's second, finest LP for CTI, offers adventurous, spacy jazz. Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, and Airto Moreira join Farrell in a quartet, pushing the label's envelope. The title track by John Scott opens the set. Williams and Jones lay down a solid rhythm for the piccodes and flutes, as Farrell weaves a hypnotic melody. "Sound Down" follows, with Farrell on soprano and Corea vamping off the melody. Corea's "Bleeding Orchid," a ballad, showcases Williams' adherence to the chord changes. Farrell's bluesy "November 68th" is a near manic sonic flight. Outback is Farrell's most inspired recording.
