After a break-out year which saw Winston Surfshirt release their debut album ‘Sponge Cake’ with over 21 million collective streams to date, the Sydney six-piece have become one of the most talked about Australian bands both at home and abroad. Amongst their success, the band has received an astounding array of recognition from global music icons including Elton John – calling them his “favourite band of the moment”, to Beats 1 tastemaker Zane Lowe, and Midnight Oil who hand picked them to support their first Australian show in 8 years.
Opening with an upbeat interpretation of the cardinal single ‘Be About You’, Roy Davis Jr injects lo-fi disco joyfulness to the record, whereas Channel Tres, delivers a low-slung deep house record for ‘Project Redo’. Karizma steps in with his stellar throwback house take on ‘When You’re Ready’, Sampology lightens the mood with a quirky remix for ‘Same Same’, and local up and comer Mookhi follows through with a stand-out remix of ‘FreeForYou’. Winston Surfshirt bandmates Bustlip and Dool, take turns re-inventing ‘For Real’ and ‘TwennyFive’ – maintaining the exemplary Winston groove.
Winston Surfshirt, a solo project turned six-piece from the Northern Beaches of Sydney, had an impressive local following before their music hit the airwaves, but once it did, the hype truly exploded across the country. From the break-out hit ‘Be About You’ supported by triple j, reaching #1 on the Spotify Viral Charts, to the 12 million collective streams it currently holds. Followed by the release of their debut album ‘Sponge Cake’, which reached #1 on the AIR Independent album charts, #6 on the iTunes album chart, with a triple j feature album, and later invited to perform a coveted triple j ‘Like A Version’ – for which they delivered an astounding rendition, ‘21 Questions’ by 50 Cent & Nate Dogg.
