Tim Maia is renowned as a key figure in Brazilian music. Hailing from the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro in 1942, he released more than 30 records over the course of his illustrious career, drawing influence from funk, bossa nova, disco, MPB, rock, soul and jazz. Maia's signature sound combined South American and American soul music with samba and baião. In 1976, it gained popularity among the working-class of the north side of Rio, amassing a following including Toni Tornado and Banda Black Rio.
