Shango by Peter King is a historically-rich album, recorded in 1974 with funds from a previous TV soundtrack session in Camden. Despite King releasing five albums between, Shango was released nearly 30 years after its recording.
The album showcases a fusion of funky, jazzy, and afrobeat sounds, led by King on saxophone and flute and supported by David Williams on bass, Paul Edoh on congas, James Menin on drums, Arthur Simon on guitar, Mike Falana on trumpet, and Humphrey Okoh-Turner on alto sax. The band combines these elements with powerful vocal messages, including a call for freedom in Africa and references to African history and the Yoruba religion. The album's closer, "Watusi," reflects on the struggle for freedom and democracy during the 1970s in Angola and channels the energy of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder and storms, into its explosive horn lines and grooves.
