After facing legal battles with his record label and a seemingly never-ending tour to promote his first album, Billy Joel retreated to his new base in Los Angeles. For half a year, he performed as a lounge singer at a local club, but still devoted time to honing his songwriting skills. "Piano Man," a fictionalized track based on his experiences as a lounge singer, was one of the songs he wrote during this time. Despite the challenges, Joel eventually signed with Columbia and released his sophomore album in 1973.
Drawing inspiration from Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection and James Taylor, Joel expands upon the vision and sound of Cold Spring Harbor in Piano Man. His music veers away from introspective numbers, instead delving into character sketches and epic narratives. Even the title track, a breakthrough hit based on his time as a saloon singer, focuses on the colorful patrons rather than the singer himself. Although his lyrics may at times be incomplete or awkward, his melodic flair and masterful repurposing of styles make the songs feel whole and purposeful. While Tumbleweed Connection may have provided the blueprint, Piano Man showcases Joel's unique musical talents and potential as a craftsman. Despite the occasional misstep in his lyrics, his melodic skills shine through, solidifying Piano Man as a must-listen for any fan of his music.
