Sergio Mendes diversified his sound by incorporating strings arranged by Dave Grusin and Dick Hazard, creating a stunning record of Brasil '66. Without relying on Antonio Carlos Jobim, Mendes selected a variety of exceptional songs from fellow Brazilian artists such as Gilberto Gil's "Roda," Joao Donato's "The Frog," Dori Caymmi's "Like a Lover," and Harold Lobo's "Tristeza." Adding a touch of the Beatles, Mendes included "With a Little Help From My Friends" from Sgt. Pepper and Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," which would become the standout track on the album, featuring a brilliant and simplified bossa nova beat.
