Phil Talks with Quill begins and ends with the same theme, “Doxie,’ by Sonny Rollins, although the second time the topic comes up the conversation takes a very different turn. The quintet has adopted this tune for its signature and is capable of ringing innumerable changes on it. Another 1959 release, this is one of three official duet dates released on LP by these two. As usual, sparks fly between the dueling alto saxes when the heir apparent Woods is joined by the seemingly unknown and definitely under-recorded Quill. Arrangements pay homage to the masters with material from Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie, none of which is foreign territory for any of the players. Another great Epic Stereo-Rama recordings from producer Mike Berniker.
